Animal Shelter: Reformed

Animal Shelter Reformed.png

Reformation of an Animal Shelter is located in East Manhattan. The goal of this project was to critique the animal adoption process and provide a unique perspective on the scale of a human-animal environment. The overriding deliverable was to have a humane living space for the animals which accounted for their scale in order to truly create a human-animal landscape. Design elements revolved around the incorporation of a dog park stitching the project together vertically in order to weave those seeking animal companionship through a built environment catering to the needs of animals within the concrete expanse of Manhattan.

Experience of Adoption

By wrapping the occupants around the dog park, a connection between those traversing the animal landscape and the animals waiting to be adopted is formed. The use of units floating in-between slabs allows for pockets of different scales to form within the center of the core itself. As the visitor travels around the building the design also allows them to establish a connection with the animals as they are the main focal point of the experience. Some of the units act as a part of the façade while also providing the central structural components of the core.
